Hong Kong Enhances Tourism Initiatives, Extends Operating Hours for Downtown Airport Check-In

Hong Kong is set to extend the operating hours for its downtown airport check-in services, aiming to boost its tourism sector and reinforce its reputation as an efficient travel hub. Effective February 1, check-in counters at Hong Kong Station will be open until 11 p.m., a significant extension from the current 3 p.m. closing time, as announced by the city’s mass railway operator MTR Corp.

This move is part of Hong Kong’s efforts to revitalize its tourism industry, which has faced challenges in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The extended hours aim to make travel more convenient for passengers and encourage more visitors to choose Hong Kong as their travel destination.

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd passengers will be the primary beneficiaries of this service extension, as they will continue to be the exclusive users of the downtown airport check-in counters. However, MTR Corp. has stated that it is coordinating with other airlines to explore potential arrangements for their passengers.

The downtown airport check-in counters provide passengers with the convenience of dropping off their luggage in the heart of the city, allowing them to collect it at their final destination without the hassle of transporting it to the airport. This service was a symbol of Hong Kong’s efficiency and convenience before its closure during the city’s COVID-19 isolation. The limited return of this service in July signaled the challenges faced by Hong Kong in attracting visitors back to the city.

The decision to extend the operating hours aligns with Hong Kong’s broader strategy to revive its tourism sector, which has experienced a decline in arrivals, particularly from mainland Chinese visitors. In December, Hong Kong witnessed approximately 2.9 million arrivals from mainland Chinese visitors through all entry points, including airports. This marked a 43% decrease compared to the numbers recorded in 2018.

The downtown airport check-in counters at Hong Kong Station have historically played a crucial role in providing a seamless travel experience for passengers. The counters allow travelers to check in, drop off their luggage, and obtain their boarding passes in the city center, streamlining the pre-flight process and contributing to a more efficient travel experience.

Hong Kong is among the select few locations globally that offer in-town check-in services, with Taipei and Kuala Lumpur being other examples. The express-train services from Hong Kong Station to the airport have a travel time of approximately 24 minutes, with departures occurring roughly every 10 minutes. The fare for a one-way ticket ranges from HK$110 to HK$115 for adults.

To further assist passengers, MTR Corp. has announced the deployment of porters at both Hong Kong and Kowloon stations. This move is expected to enhance the overall passenger experience and contribute to the successful implementation of the extended downtown airport check-in hours.

As Hong Kong takes steps to adapt its services and enhance travel convenience, the tourism sector is optimistic about the positive impact on visitor numbers and the city’s overall reputation as a global travel hub.
