Video capturing fascist salutes from a crowd in the center of Rome causes concern in Italy, but the Prime Minister remains unfazed

A video capturing over 150 men, dressed in black, giving fascist salutes in central Rome has caused concern across Italy. The event occurred on January 7 to commemorate the 46th anniversary of the Acca Larentia massacre, where three young neo-fascist militants from the Italian Social Movement (MSI) were killed. The video is under investigation by Rome’s special anti-fascism police unit. The saluting men were heard shouting “present” and a neo-fascist battle cry: “For all fallen comrades.” The commemoration takes place every January 7, attended by members of both left and right-wing political spectrums.

The incident has prompted calls for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to ban neo-fascist groups. However, Meloni, who previously led the MSI, has not commented on the issue. The opposition, including Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein, urges Meloni to disband neo-fascist groups. While the Italian constitution bans fascist ideology, fascist memorabilia and gestures like the salute are not illegal. Critics call for tightening the laws, describing such acts as “dangerous nostalgia.”

Rome’s main prosecutor has initiated an investigation into the event, examining if anyone violated the “apology for fascism” law. The General Investigations and Special Operations Division (DIGOS) identified 150 participants, including nine with previous fascism-related criminal charges. The resurgence of neo-fascism in Europe will be debated in the European Parliament, with concerns over Meloni’s silence on the domestic issue.

Meloni, known for her moderate leadership, has been praised for her stance on various international issues. However, her silence on the recent fascist salute incident raises questions about her ability to condemn such events. The European Parliament plans to discuss the matter, with critics emphasizing the importance of condemning the events of January 7.
