Tropical Cyclone Kirrily Approaches Queensland in Australia, Residents and Tourists Advised to Take Precautions

Tropical Cyclone Kirrily is posing a threat to northeastern Australia, with the potential for destructive impacts including flooding and high winds. The tropical low, gaining strength over the Coral Sea, is expected to become the second cyclone within two months to bring adverse weather conditions to the country’s northeast coast.

Tracking west toward the Queensland state coast near Townsville, the system is anticipated to be named Tropical Cyclone Kirrily on Tuesday or Wednesday. The forecast suggests it will make landfall overnight Thursday, bringing winds with gusts of up to 120 kph (75 mph) as it crosses the Whitsunday Islands on Wednesday evening. Subsequently, wind speeds are expected to increase to 150 kph (93 mph) upon reaching the Australian mainland.

In December, the same region experienced the impact of Tropical Cyclone Jasper, which had winds reaching up to 140 kph (87 mph). This marked the first tropical cyclone of the Australian season, spanning the months of November to April in the southern hemisphere.

Laura Boekel, a forecaster with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, indicated that storm tides generated by Kirrily could affect coastal towns such as Townsville and Mackay. Storm surges are anticipated to elevate sea levels significantly, posing a risk of damaging waves and flooding, especially in low-lying areas near the shoreline.

The Australian authorities have urged residents and tourists to stay vigilant and monitor warnings. While heavy to intense rain is forecast for other parts of Queensland as the storm moves inland, there has been no explicit directive to cancel plans for the upcoming Australia Day holiday on Friday. Instead, people are advised to remain alert, especially considering the likelihood of increased travel during the long weekend.

Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll emphasized the importance of public safety, referencing the loss of seven lives within two days during the previous disaster season. Extra emergency services crews specializing in flood rescues have been placed on standby in the northern coastal region to respond to potential incidents.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles highlighted the significant economic impact of recent storms, estimating costs running into “multiple billions” from Tropical Cyclone Jasper and other weather events in December. The potential for a repeat of such events during the current weather system raises concerns about the cumulative impact on the state.

The real challenge, according to Miles, is the extensive geographic area likely to experience the effects of Kirrily, from its landfall as a cyclone to the rain that may fall inland after it weakens. Despite the challenges, authorities are focused on ensuring public safety and minimizing the potential for further loss of life and damage to property.
