In the wake of Storm Isha, thousands of airline passengers found themselves in unintended destinations and even different countries as the storm wreaked havoc on flight plans across western Europe. The usually efficient mode of travel turned into an odyssey for those flying to and from Ireland and the UK, where airports bore the brunt of gusts reaching up to 90 mph, disrupting runways and flight schedules.

The impact on air travel was particularly pronounced for Ryanair, whose Dublin base experienced 166 cancellations on Sunday, according to Kevin Cullinane, the group head of communications at daa, the operator of Dublin Airport. Additionally, there were 36 flight diversions and 34 go-arounds, adding to the chaos caused by Storm Isha. Other airports in Ireland, such as Cork, also faced cancellations, diversions, and go-arounds, highlighting the widespread disruption.

The repercussions of Storm Isha extended beyond Ireland, affecting various parts of the UK. Over 100 go-arounds were reported at UK airports, according to NATS, the UK’s air traffic control operator. Lufthansa, too, had to navigate the challenges posed by Storm Isha, with a flight from Munich to Dublin being forced into a go-around and return to Munich. Cork, Manchester, Edinburgh, Gatwick, and Stansted were among the airports that witnessed cancellations, diversions, and go-arounds, creating a domino effect as aircraft were left out of position across Europe.
