Tragic Accident in Cancun: 4 Fatalities as Boat Carrying 19 Crashes in Waters, Confirm Officials

A tragic incident occurred on Monday, resulting in the death of four individuals after a boat, named Diosa del Mar (translating to “Goddess of the Sea”), carrying 19 people sank between Cancún and Isla Mujeres. The victims included 17 Mexican tourists, the captain, and a helper. The boat, which set sail from Cancún on Monday night, was en route to Isla Mujeres, an island located approximately 3.5 miles off the coast of Cancún.

The Isla Mujeres city council, in a news release, stated that the boat hailed from Puerto Juárez, and the accident transpired in the bay connecting Cancún and Isla Mujeres—two renowned vacation spots. The passengers had visited a restaurant on Isla Mujeres and were returning to Cancún when the tragedy occurred. Prompt rescue efforts were initiated, with most passengers being successfully rescued, albeit some requiring hospitalization.

A comprehensive search-and-rescue operation was executed by Quintana Roo’s state coordination of the civil protection department, in collaboration with local agencies and the Mexican navy. The rescue mission involved providing medical attention to those who had been saved.

The attorney general of Quintana Roo state, Raciel López Salazar, disclosed during a press conference that investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing. The authorities are scrutinizing factors such as weather conditions and the boat’s capacity to determine if it was suitable for carrying 19 passengers. Initial reports suggest that the 26-foot boat, officially designed for 16 individuals, exceeded its capacity.

El Universal, a local newspaper, reported that passengers on board comprised 14 adult tourists, one infant, two minors, the captain, and a crew member. The boat’s capacity limit was allegedly breached, leading to questions about compliance with safety regulations.

Tragically, the victims included one woman, two men, and a 10-year-old boy, according to Riviera Maya News. Some survivors sustained severe injuries, requiring hospitalization. One individual is reportedly on life support, and others are grappling with nervous breakdowns.

Reports suggest that the incident occurred amid high waves on Monday night, with local media speculating that the wake generated by a larger passing vessel might have contributed to the boat’s sinking.

In response to the tragedy, the Isla Mujeres government released a statement affirming that the captain of Diosa del Mar was promptly handed over to the authorities to ascertain accountability for the accident. Salazar conveyed that the captain bore some responsibility, as reported by NBC News.
