Time Out has recently disclosed its selection of the finest cities globally for the year 2024. The city that often assumes the leading role in your favorite TV shows and movies, serves as inspiration for numerous songs and artworks, and stands as one of the most famous destinations globally, has been recognized as the best city for 2024 by Time Out: New York City.

The decision was informed by a survey conducted by Time Out, which engaged approximately 20,000 city-dwellers worldwide. Additionally, insights from Time Out’s extensive network of global writers and editors were considered in compiling the latest roundup of the world’s premier cities. The evaluation encompassed various factors such as the cities’ culinary scenes, architectural landscapes, and cultural vibrancy.

The primary objective of Time Out’s endeavor is to offer not only travel inspiration but also a comprehensive global overview of city living. New York City secured the top spot, with its myriad of museums and a thriving theater scene earning special mentions. Time Out attributed the city’s global appeal and reputation as factors that contributed to its ranking as the preferred destination for relocation among global city-dwellers.

Occupying the second position on Time Out’s list is Cape Town, South Africa. Described by every survey respondent as “beautiful,” Cape Town’s allure lies in its stunning amalgamation of sea, cityscape, and majestic mountainous surroundings. Time Out highlighted the city’s cultural offerings, including late-night museum events, theater, and comedy performances at Theatre on the Bay, and the recently opened Time Out Market Cape Town.

Cape Town, however, is not without its challenges, as Katy Scott, a former resident, points out. Despite being celebrated for its unpretentious coastal charm and numerous amenities, Scott notes that many of these attractions are not accessible to the majority of citizens. Scott encourages visitors to break free from the tourist bubble and explore meaningful sites such as Robben Island and the District Six museum, both recommended by Time Out, to gain profound insights into South Africa’s apartheid history.

Time Out’s top five cities are rounded out by Berlin, Germany, celebrated for its vibrant nightlife scene; London, UK, lauded for its legendary pubs and free museums and galleries; and Madrid, Spain, recognized for its exceptional dining and drinking establishments. Notable smaller cities in the top 10 include Liverpool, UK, at the seventh position, and Porto, Portugal, at number 10. Porto earned praise from Time Out survey respondents as an excellent city for romance.
