In a significant development, the renowned luxury train, Palace on Wheels, is poised to redefine its journey after 42 years of operation. Recent reports suggest that this iconic train will embark on a historic voyage to the sacred city of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.
Known as the world’s second most luxurious train, Palace on Wheels has announced a shift in focus by introducing religious tours starting from May. According to reports, this six-day spiritual expedition will commence from Delhi and traverse through Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Mathura, and Vrindavan.
Traditionally, Palace on Wheels has catered to both foreign and domestic tourists by offering non-vegetarian cuisine and alcoholic beverages during its regular journeys. However, in alignment with the religious significance of the upcoming tours, officials have decided to exclude non-vegetarian options from the menu and refrain from using onion and garlic in dishes.
The religious tours are scheduled to take place twice a month, providing flexibility for local tourists who may prefer specific destinations such as Ayodhya or Prayagraj. Special discounts will be offered for tailored trips to accommodate diverse preferences and interests.
The management of Palace on Wheels has been entrusted to Cube Construction Company Pvt Ltd, a Gujarat-based private firm, by the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) for the next seven years. Under this new arrangement, Cube Construction Company will commence religious tour services in May, offering a comprehensive six-day itinerary starting from Delhi and encompassing Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Mathura, and Vrindavan.
Pradeep Bohra, Director of Palace on Wheels, has confirmed that the customary non-vegetarian fare and alcoholic beverages served during regular journeys will be omitted during religious tours. The menu for these spiritual journeys will prioritize vegetarian options and exclude onion and garlic, while passengers will also be treated to devotional melodies resonating with the spirit of Ram and Krishna throughout the expedition.
Previously operational for eight months annually, Palace on Wheels, under the new management, aims to extend its services year-round. The introduction of religious tours, initially planned for a two-month period, is designed to appeal to local tourists with flexible itineraries and discounted rates for specific destinations.
Cube Construction Company has committed to an annual payment of INR 5 crore to the RTDC for operating Palace on Wheels, along with a share of 18% of the total turnover. The recent INR 7 crore refurbishment marks the train’s fourth-generation upgrade, overseen by the Gujarat-based company.
In summary, the forthcoming religious tours by Palace on Wheels represent a significant departure from its traditional offerings, catering to the spiritual aspirations of travelers while maintaining the train’s legacy of luxury and excellence in hospitality.
