In Case of Fog Affecting Your Flight, Avoid Blaming the Captain – Take This Alternative Action

Air travel can be a source of anxiety and frustration due to various potential issues, ranging from delays to disruptive incidents during the journey. In recent days, dense fog has significantly impacted flight operations in North and Central India, leading to numerous delays and cancellations, creating a challenging environment for both passengers and airline personnel.

On January 15, approximately 168 flights faced delays, with nearly 100 cancellations, highlighting the severity of the situation. For instance, the Delhi-Goa IndiGo flight 6E2175 experienced a delay of over 13 hours on January 14, leaving passengers uninformed about the reasons behind the extended wait.

Amidst the chaos, a disturbing incident unfolded as a frustrated passenger aboard the Delhi-Goa IndiGo flight resorted to physically assaulting the captain. A video circulating on social media captured the moment when the irate passenger, identified as Sahil Kataria, punched the captain while he was announcing delays. Following the incident, Kataria was deboarded and handed over to Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel.

The captain lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police, leading to the registration of an FIR against Kataria. Additionally, there is a possibility that Kataria may be added to the ‘no-fly list’ by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Subsequently, a video surfaced showing Kataria apologizing to the pilot, acknowledging the gravity of his actions.

While reactions to this incident varied, with some condemning the passenger’s behavior and others sympathizing with his frustration, it underscores the challenges faced by both passengers and airlines during adverse situations.

Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia, addressed the fog-related flight disruptions, emphasizing that necessary steps are being taken to manage the fog impact. He explained that the decision to temporarily shut down operations on certain runways, even those categorized as CAT III runways, was made to prioritize passenger safety. Scindia highlighted ongoing efforts, including the expedited operationalization of a new runway at Delhi Airport and the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for airlines to enhance communication and passenger facilitation during adverse weather conditions.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Scindia urged travelers to cooperate during this difficult period and emphasized the unacceptable nature of unruly behavior. He assured that stakeholders are working to minimize passenger inconvenience.

In response to such incidents, it is crucial for passengers to refrain from resorting to violence or disruptive behavior. Instead, they can take proactive steps to cope with flight delays and uncertainties:

  1. Check for updates: Stay informed about your flight’s status through online platforms and airport displays. Utilize Google or your airline’s app for real-time updates.
  2. Approach staff calmly: If necessary, communicate with airline staff or use customer service channels for information about delays. Express concerns respectfully, understanding that staff may be following protocols beyond their control.
  3. Reorganize your itinerary: Adjust plans if your flight is delayed or canceled. Notify relevant parties about changes to connecting flights or other arrangements.
  4. Stock up on entertainment: Carry books, movies, or music to stay entertained during potential delays. Use the time productively or engage in activities to alleviate travel anxiety.
  5. Stock up on food and water: Bring snacks and an empty water bottle to avoid additional costs at the airport. Consider carrying an airtight container for food to prevent leakage.
  6. Move around: Explore the airport, visit shops or exhibits, and discover new places to pass the time if sitting in one place becomes stressful.
  7. Charge your devices: Keep electronic devices charged using airport charging stations, ensuring access to communication and entertainment.
  8. Relax: Find a comfortable spot to relax, minimizing stress and frustration during unexpected delays.

Understanding refund policies and compensations for delayed or canceled flights is also crucial for passengers seeking appropriate remedies. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that airlines may not provide compensation for circumstances beyond their control, such as natural disasters or government regulations.

In challenging situations like flight disruptions caused by fog, maintaining composure and seeking constructive solutions contribute to a more positive travel experience for everyone involved.
