Imperial Palace of Ethiopia Revealed to the Public for the First Time

Ethiopia’s Imperial Palace, a century-old complex that has long been shrouded in secrecy, has now opened its doors to the public.

Previously accessible only to the country’s leaders and their guards, the 40-acre compound overlooking Addis Ababa has undergone a $170 million renovation, transforming a section into a 15-acre park known as Unity Park. The initiative, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, aims to offer residents and tourists a chance to explore the historic site while beautifying the capital.

The renovated park features a blend of open spaces, refurbished palace buildings, and animal enclosures, symbolizing a departure from Ethiopia’s authoritarian past. Visitors can now stroll through Menelik II’s palace complex, complete with quirky sculptures, historical artifacts, and a sculpture garden representing the country’s nine regions.

The park also includes a zoo housing various wildlife, including an Abyssinian Lion indigenous to Ethiopia. In addition to serving as a cultural attraction, the park is part of broader efforts to enhance Addis Ababa’s urban landscape, providing much-needed green spaces in the bustling city.

The opening of Unity Park represents a step toward transparency, inviting locals and tourists to explore the historic grounds and fostering trust between citizens and leaders.
