How Ukraine’s railway system remains operational despite two years of conflict

In response to the changing times, traditional ticket offices have made way for modern spaces like “Iron Land,” a UNICEF-supported initiative aimed at providing a welcoming environment for families amidst the chaos of war. These efforts reflect UZ’s broader initiative to transform railway stations into more inviting public spaces, offering solace to those displaced by conflict.

While UZ continues to provide vital transportation services, its employees face significant risks. Despite the constant threat of attacks and the strain of long hours under challenging conditions, railway workers persist in their duties. However, this dedication comes at a cost to their physical and mental well-being. To address these concerns, UZ has implemented programs like “Iron Family,” offering support to injured employees and the families of those killed in action.

As Ukraine looks towards the future, UZ remains committed to modernization and expansion. An ambitious $25 billion investment plan includes the development of new standard gauge lines integrated into the EU’s Trans-European Transport Network. Additionally, efforts are underway to improve accessibility and accommodate the needs of all passengers, including those with disabilities.
