Saudi Arabia’s tourism ambitions are soaring, and Diriyah, its historical crown jewel, is poised to become a global cultural hub. This ambitious giga-project aims to attract 27 million visitors a year by 2030, offering a captivating blend of ancient and modern experiences.
Diriyah’s significance is profound. It’s the birthplace of Saudi Arabia, the ancestral home of the Al Saud dynasty, and boasts the UNESCO World Heritage Site of At-Turaif, the cradle of the First Saudi State. Preserving and promoting this legacy is at the heart of the project.
But Diriyah is far more than a museum. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with history, culture, and entertainment. The first phases showcase the restored At-Turaif with its galleries and museums, alongside Bujairi Terrace, a collection of upscale restaurants nestled in traditional mud-brick architecture.
Yet, this is just the beginning. A rolling masterplan promises continuous expansion, with 38 hotels and resorts, six museums, 26 cultural attractions, and over 400 luxury shops in the pipeline. Six expansive parks add an oasis of greenery, with trails for walking, cycling, and horseback riding.
Events are another major draw. From the high-octane Diriyah Formula E race to concerts by global stars, the Diriyah Season pulsates with energy. Stunning light installations by renowned artists transform the palm groves into an immersive wonderland, while pop-up restaurants and shisha lounges beckon locals and tourists alike.
Diriyah’s impact extends beyond tourism. It’s transforming Riyadh, introducing smart city initiatives, pedestrianized areas, and a new metro connection. This breath of fresh air promises to ease the city’s notorious traffic woes.
Perhaps the most heartwarming aspect is the human connection. A team of enthusiastic young Saudi guides, including Princess Al-Jawhara Abdulmohsin Al-Saud, bring history to life, sharing stories of imams, architecture, and traditions. Princess Al-Jawhara embodies the project’s spirit, finding personal fulfillment in guiding visitors through her ancestral homeland.
Diriyah’s ambition is to become a beacon for both Saudis and international visitors. For locals, it’s a chance to reconnect with their roots, while for tourists, it’s a window into a unique and authentic Saudi Arabia.
Jerry Inzerillo, Group CEO, sums it up beautifully: “For locals, it’s a celebration of their rich heritage. For visitors, it’s an immersive cultural experience. Diriyah is a city built from earth, ready to connect the world to the heart of Saudi Arabia.”
With its rich tapestry of history, culture, and modern marvels, Diriyah is poised to become a cultural colossus, drawing the world to the heart of Saudi Arabia’s past and future.
