Delta Air Lines is set to expand its trans-Pacific offerings with the launch of nonstop flights from Seattle to Taiwan, connecting the United States directly to the island nation. The inaugural flight is scheduled for June 6, 2024, pending government approval, and will provide daily nonstop service from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) in Taipei. The airline has chosen the Airbus A330-900neo aircraft for this year-round route.
This announcement marks a significant development for Delta as it re-establishes its presence in Taiwan, having last operated flights to the country in 2017, connecting it from Tokyo’s Narita International Airport (NRT). The reintroduction of this route underscores Delta’s commitment to expanding its trans-Pacific portfolio and enhancing global connectivity, particularly from its hub in Seattle.
Joan Wang, a managing director with Delta, highlighted the broader impact of this strategic addition, stating, “This route not only opens new doors to Taipei’s captivating skyline, vibrant night markets, and rich cultural heritage, but it also marks a significant stride in enhancing Seattle’s global connectivity. This strategic addition to Delta’s trans-Pacific portfolio is poised to make a profound impact on the Seattle market, fostering increased business and leisure travel opportunities for our discerning customers.”
The decision to launch the Seattle-Taipei route aligns with the growing interest in Taiwan as a travel destination. Earlier this year, Taiwan introduced an innovative plan to incentivize tourism by offering cash vouchers to visitors. Tourists not part of organized groups staying on the island for three to 90 days were eligible to enter a draw for a voucher worth NT $5,000 (approximately $159.16). The Taiwan Tourism Administration aimed to select 500,000 travelers for this incentive program through June 30, 2025.
In addition to the Taipei route, Delta is strengthening its position in the trans-Pacific market by providing nonstop service from Seattle to three other key destinations: Seoul, Tokyo, and Shanghai. The airline’s continued expansion reflects its dedication to offering a comprehensive network and convenient travel options for passengers connecting across the Pacific.
Looking ahead, Delta has outlined its commitment to further enhancing its trans-Pacific offerings. This expansion includes resuming service to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport from both Honolulu and Minneapolis, as well as launching new service from Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand. These initiatives underscore Delta’s strategic vision to provide diverse travel opportunities and cater to the evolving needs of its passengers in the Pacific region.
As Delta broadens its trans-Pacific footprint, the airline anticipates positive impacts on both Seattle’s global connectivity and the overall travel experience for customers seeking new and convenient routes to explore Asia and beyond.
