Collision Between Aircrafts Occurs at Japanese Airport Amid Wintry Conditions

In wintry weather conditions at Japan’s New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, a Korean Air plane clipped wings with a Cathay Pacific jet on Tuesday. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries in the incident that took place around 5:30 p.m., involving a Korean Air jet with 289 passengers and crew and an empty Cathay Pacific plane.

The collision adds to recent concerns over airport safety in Japan, following a fatal aircraft collision at Tokyo’s Haneda airport on January 2. In that incident, a Japan Airlines jet burst into flames after colliding with a coast guard plane.

Both Korean Air and Cathay Pacific confirmed the incident on social media. Korean Air stated that one of its aircraft “came into contact” with the Cathay plane during pushback and assured that it is “cooperating with all relevant authorities.” Cathay Pacific explained that its plane “was stationary at the time with no customers nor crew onboard” when it was “struck by a Korean Air A330 which was taxiing past.”

While there are no reported concerns about oil leakage, the details of the incident are under investigation by the airport authorities. The collision resulted in the cancellation of Cathay flight 583 from Sapporo to Hong Kong. Passengers affected by the cancellation were informed that they would be accommodated on additional flights later in the day and the following day.

This incident comes amid heightened attention to aviation safety and protocols, especially after the tragic collision in Tokyo earlier this month. As aviation authorities investigate these incidents, there is a renewed focus on ensuring stringent safety measures, particularly in adverse weather conditions, to prevent such collisions and guarantee passenger and crew safety.
