Six individuals sustained injuries on Saturday after an American Airlines plane experienced a “hard landing” at Kahului Airport in Maui, as stated by federal officials.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is conducting an investigation into the incident, which involved American Airlines Flight 271, an Airbus A320, making a hard landing on the runway at approximately 2:00 p.m. local time.
American Airlines, in response to the incident, informed USA TODAY that one passenger and five flight attendants were transported to the hospital in stable condition and were subsequently released.
The flight, originating from Los Angeles, carried 167 passengers and seven crew members.
“The aircraft taxied to the gate under its own power and customers deplaned normally,” American Airlines stated. The airline further noted that the plane was taken out of service for inspection by its maintenance team.
“The safety of our customers and team members is our top priority,” the company emphasized.
Kahului Airport reported that the flight arrived more than an hour after its scheduled touch down at 12:47 p.m. following a taxiing delay at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) before takeoff. The reason for the delay and any potential connection to the subsequent hard landing remains unclear.
The FAA has initiated a probe into the circumstances surrounding the hard landing to determine the contributing factors. Information on weather conditions, technical malfunctions, or pilot actions that may have played a role in the incident will likely be part of the ongoing investigation.
American Airlines assured that it would fully cooperate with the FAA and any other relevant authorities during the inquiry process.
Incidents involving hard landings can result from various factors, including adverse weather conditions, mechanical issues, or errors in piloting. Investigations into such occurrences typically involve a comprehensive analysis of flight data, cockpit voice recordings, and examination of the aircraft’s systems.
The passengers and crew members who were hospitalized and subsequently released will likely undergo medical assessments to determine the extent of their injuries and ensure that there are no lingering health concerns.
American Airlines, like all airlines, adheres to stringent safety protocols and standards. In the event of an incident, the airline is obligated to follow established procedures, including conducting inspections, cooperating with investigations, and prioritizing the well-being of passengers and crew members.
As the FAA completes its investigation, additional details may emerge, shedding light on the specific factors that led to the American Airlines plane’s hard landing at Kahului Airport.
